My friends and family know that I'm always doing some kind of challenge. Back in college I was obsessed with Kendi Everyday's 30 for 30 Challenge and recently I've been into a savings challenge. But one of the things I've been doing since 2011 is a 100 book Challenge.
The challenge is simple (in theory): you read 100 books in a year.
Before you freak out, I promise it is one of the most exciting challenges I have ever done. But not without it's challenges (pun intended). In fact, I've actually never made it to the 100 books. 97 is as close as I've gotten and I'm totally OK with that.
This year, however, I want to make it to the big 100. Not because that's what the challenge is about, but because if I can read three more books I'll know that much more. And that's really the purpose. Somewhere, probably in a book, I read that successful people read about 100-150 books every year. Hearing that blew my mind. How do people with businesses and multimillion dollar corporations manage to do this? They make it a priority. And that's what I've done.
So, I'm sure you have questions. How can I get started? How do I enter this wonderful world of reading? Or why do you torture yourself? I'll answer my most FAQs below:
How do you get it done?
Most people often ask how do I do the millions of other things I have going on and still make time to read? Well, I make it a priority. In the moments that I would be scrolling through Instagram or Pinning like a maniac on Pinterest, I read. Even if it's just for a few minutes, I read.
It's also important to know how fast or slow you read. I'm a pretty swift reader, so I know that I can probably read 2-3 books a week with no problem. Reading 100 books a year, roughly, works out to 3 books a week or about 12-13 books a month.
How do you afford all of these books?
Funny thing happens when you tell people you're reading 100 books in a year. Even if they don't want to join in, they want to help you. So, A LOT of my books come from friends or family loaning me books or buying books for me. I, also, plan to ask people to give me books or bookstore gift cards for my birthday this year. I want to have a book themed party, but that's another story for another day. ;-)
What's the benefit of reading so many books?
I love to read already. So, it's not a chore. Most of all, the benefit is just that I get to do something to relax. But I also get to read up on topics that intrigue me or things that will help me professionally. I can't count the amount of things I've learned from this little challenge; the things that have annoyed my friends as I've talked and talked about them.
How do you choose what to read next?
It's pretty organic. Sometimes, it's just a book I've had on my shelf for a while and haven't read. Other times, people will give me a book or recommend one. And then other times, I just go to the bookstore or library (yes the LIBRARY) and pick up a book with an interesting cover. I judge books by their cover and it's worked out for me so far.
What's your first book this year?
Well, you'll have to follow me on Instagram to find that out later today. ;-) @whitandlove
